Constitutional Intervention to Prevent Leadership Vacuum
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has entered a state of internal transition following a landmark Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 30, 2026. The Sen. Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees (BoT) announced on Friday that it has assumed the leadership of the party to prevent a constitutional crisis. According to a statement issued in Abuja, the BoT is acting under the empowering provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), which positions the BoT as the second-highest organ of the party during times of executive uncertainty.
The Impact of the Supreme Court Ruling
The legal crisis stems from the Supreme Court's invalidation of the November 2025 Ibadan convention, which had produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC). Furthermore, the apex court upheld the suspensions of several key officials, including National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. The BoT noted that this ruling effectively nullifies all subsequent actions, including the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as acting National Chairman and the outcomes of the March 29 national convention. By striking down both the Mohammed-led and Turaki-led committees, the court left the party without a recognized executive structure.
Emergency NEC Meeting and Interim Appointments
To restore administrative order, the Wabara-led BoT has directed all party staff to resume duties at the national secretariat under its direct supervision. The board plans to summon an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to appoint an interim NWC. This temporary leadership will be tasked with stabilizing the party and ensuring it meets the stringent timelines set by the Electoral Act, 2026. The ultimate goal, according to the BoT, is to prepare the PDP for a unified and victorious showing in the 2027 general elections.
