Judicial Verdict Triggers Leadership Reset
The Peoples Democratic Party is navigating a significant internal restructuring following a definitive ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. According to Babangida Aliyu, the National Secretary of the Board of Trustees, the apex court has nullified the party’s November 2025 elective national convention by dismissing an appeal filed by Tanimu Turaki. This judicial intervention has effectively dissolved the standing National Working Committee, creating a temporary leadership vacuum that the party must now fill through constitutional protocols. Aliyu emphasized that the party accepts the decision as a final legal reality, shifting the focus toward maintaining administrative continuity during this transition.
Board of Trustees Steps into the Breach
In the absence of a recognized National Working Committee, the party’s constitution mandates that the Board of Trustees assume oversight of all operations. Senator Adolphus Wabara, as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, has officially taken control to ensure the organization remains functional and stable. This move was confirmed during an emergency expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where party leaders gathered to interpret the implications of the court’s decision. According to Aliyu, this measure prevents the party from becoming rudderless while a new path toward a valid convention is established by the remaining internal organs.
Dissolution of Competing Leadership Claims
The Supreme Court judgment also addressed a cross appeal by a team representing Samuel Anyanwu, which has further clarified the party's internal hierarchy. The verdict effectively affirmed the suspension of several high ranking officials, including Kamaldeen Ajibade and Anyanwu himself. This aspect of the ruling has divested both previously competing factions of their claims to leadership, providing a clean slate for the Board of Trustees to operate. By removing these conflicting interests, the judiciary has provided a clear legal framework for the party to consolidate its power under a single, constitutionally recognized body.
