The Battle for Control Post Supreme Court Ruling

The internal struggle for the soul of the Peoples Democratic Party intensified on Friday as a faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike moved to consolidate power. Addressing a press conference at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters, Jungudo Mohammed, the factional National Publicity Secretary, insisted that the recent judicial outcome did not strip current officials of their mandates. This bold assertion serves as a direct rebuttal to rival claims that the party’s top hierarchy had been dissolved by the apex court, marking a new phase in the ongoing war for administrative dominance.

Clarifying the Scope of the Apex Court Judgment

Central to the dispute is the interpretation of the Supreme Court’s 3, 2 split decision delivered on April 30, 2026. The Wike backed faction argued that the ruling was specifically limited to the invalidation of the 15th and 16th Ibadan conventions, which had produced the leadership backed by Governor Seyi Makinde. Mohammed clarified that the judgment addressed only the legality of those specific gatherings and made no mention of suspending or expelling the current officers, Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu, who he claims remain the only recognized leaders.

Constitutional Challenges to Board of Trustees Authority

The faction has launched a scathing critique of Adolphus Wabara, the former Senate President, who recently announced a Board of Trustees takeover of the party. Jungudo Mohammed alleged that Wabara’s tenure as BoT Chairman had already expired, rendering his current actions and scheduled meetings unconstitutional. The faction instead recognizes Mao Ohuabunwa as the legitimate head of the BoT, arguing that the party’s constitution provides no legal mechanism for the board to seize executive control of the National Working Committee under these circumstances.
