Rapid Inundation and Narrow Escapes in Mount Cook
The suburb of Mount Cook transformed into a high stakes rescue zone in the early hours of Monday as the Pāpāwai Stream burst its banks. Residents on Wright Street reported waking to the sight of nearly half a dozen vehicles floating down the roadway as floodwaters reached front doors. One local resident described stepping out of bed into ten centimeters of rising water, with the sound of "gurgling" indicating the flood was seeping directly through the floorboards. In a desperate bid for safety, flatmates were forced to interlock arms to wade through chest high currents that threatened to sweep them away as they evacuated to higher ground.
Landslides and Structural Failures in Brooklyn
In the nearby suburb of Brooklyn, the heavy rainfall triggered significant geological instability. One resident on Ōwhiro Road survived a "nightmare" scenario when a landslide caused his bedroom wall to cave in and the roof to partially collapse around 5:00 am. Similar events were reported throughout the neighborhood, with one family hosting neighbors overnight after a slip pushed a storage shed into a parked car and blocked residential access. Fire and Emergency New Zealand have since cordoned off several properties, mandating geotechnical reviews before displaced families are permitted to return to their homes.
Desperate Rescues for Vulnerable Populations
The human toll of the storm was particularly evident in Berhampore and Island Bay, where community members stepped in to save elderly and isolated neighbors. One resident recounted a frantic emergency call with an elderly neighbor whose home was filling with water in total darkness before the line went dead. Rescuers eventually reached the woman after she was found moving frantically inside the inundated structure. In other parts of the district, residents arrived at friends' homes in their pajamas, having waded through thigh high water while their household appliances, including refrigerators, began to float around them.
