Evolution of the AI Shopping Journey

Walmart has officially revamped its artificial intelligence checkout application following an initial launch that failed to meet internal standards for flexibility. The original "Instant Checkout" feature, which debuted in September 2025, was designed to allow consumers to complete entire transactions directly within the ChatGPT interface. However, executive feedback indicated that a closed-loop system did not provide the level of adaptability required for a diverse retail environment. Consequently, Walmart is shifting its strategy to prioritize product discovery within AI platforms while redirecting the actual purchase phase back to its own proprietary systems.

The Transition to Agentic Commerce Protocol

The new iteration of Walmart’s AI experience is built upon OpenAI’s "Agentic Commerce Protocol" (ACP), supported by commerce partner Sparky. This framework is designed to facilitate the full shopping journey—from a user’s initial inquiry in ChatGPT to the final transaction in a dedicated Walmart environment. By integrating into ACP, Walmart joins a growing list of major retailers, including Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, and The Home Depot, who are seeking to capitalize on AI-driven product discovery. This move reflects a broader industry shift where retailers are reclaiming the "purchase portion" of the customer experience to maintain control over loyalty programs and payment security.

Enhanced Account Linking and Loyalty Integration

One of the primary improvements in the revamped app is the support for seamless account linking and loyalty integration. Unlike the first version, which focused heavily on a universal payment feature in partnership with platforms like Etsy and Shopify, the new Sparky-backed system ensures that Walmart’s existing customer relationships remain central. Daniel Danker, executive vice president of AI acceleration at Walmart, noted that "shopping can start anywhere now," emphasizing that the goal is to meet the consumer at the point of curiosity—such as a question in ChatGPT—and move them smoothly toward a finalized order with their saved preferences and rewards.
