A Deadly Ambush on Good Friday

The security situation in Plateau State has taken another grim turn following a violent ambush in the Nyamgo Gyel area of Jos South Local Government Area. On the evening of Friday, April 3, 2026, at approximately 7 p.m., a group of approximately 15 youths were traveling via motorbike when they were intercepted by armed assailants. The attack resulted in the immediate deaths of three men identified as Luka Sandu Pam, Samuel Davou, and Deme Saidu. The timing of the incident, occurring during the religious observance of Good Friday, has left the local community in a state of profound shock.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Assault

According to Dung Davou, the Gyel Youth Leader, the group was returning from a mining site near Gero when they were met with sporadic and sudden gunfire. The survivors reported that the attackers, suspected to be armed herdsmen, appeared from the surrounding brush, forcing the youths to scatter in various directions to seek cover. While most of the group managed to escape, the three victims were unable to evade the initial volleys of fire. The sole survivor of the immediate shooting was evacuated by police and is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

Community Warnings and Strategic Concerns

Barrister Solomon Dalyop, Chairman of the Berom Youth Moulder Association, expressed deep frustration at the scene of the killings. He revealed that community leaders had recently participated in a high level security meeting with the Fulani community and the Nigerian Army's Sector 2 Command. During those discussions, specific concerns were raised regarding the suspicious movement of unknown individuals in the Gero, Rafin Bauna, and Dutsen Kura axes. Despite these early warnings and calls for heightened vigilance, the ambush suggests that the intelligence provided did not result in a preventative security deployment.
