Defiance Of Presidential Peace Assurances

The security situation in Plateau State has faced a grim setback as suspected terrorist elements launched fresh attacks on rural communities, directly following high-level government intervention. On Friday morning, less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu concluded a visit to Jos to commiserate with victims, Dalyop Betobeje was murdered in the Jol community of Riyom Local Government Area. Local leaders have characterized this timing as a deliberate provocation against the Federal Government's efforts to stabilize the region and reassure the local population.

Tragedy In Bassa Local Government Area

The violence in Riyom follows another fatal incursion in the Heipang District of Bassa Local Government Area. On Wednesday night, gunmen suspected to be herdsmen stormed Ban village, resulting in the death of Gloria Godwin, a secondary school student. The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) reported that the attackers also left several others injured and caused significant property damage. This series of assaults underscores the persistent vulnerability of educational and residential spaces in the state’s rural districts despite increased military presence.

Presidential Commitment Faces Reality

During his brief stay in Plateau, President Tinubu issued a firm promise to residents, stating that the government was committed to ensuring such violent experiences would not repeat themselves. His visit was intended to provide a sense of security and federal support to a grieving population. However, the immediate resumption of hostilities in Riyom and Bassa has cast a shadow over these assurances, testing the administration's capacity to convert executive promises into actionable safety on the ground.
