Fatal Incursion Near Plateau State Polytechnic Campus
Violence erupted in the Ban community of Heipang late Wednesday night when unidentified gunmen invaded the area situated directly opposite the Plateau State Polytechnic. At approximately 11 p.m., the attackers began firing indiscriminately into the residential zone, striking three individuals during the chaos. While the victims were quickly transported to a local medical facility for emergency treatment, one woman succumbed to her gunshot wounds shortly after arrival. The proximity of the gunfire to student housing sparked immediate panic among the academic community, particularly for those residing off-campus.
Escalation of Fear Among the Student Population
The auditory impact of the high-caliber gunfire created a state of confusion and terror within the Plateau State Polytechnic environment. Nanchip Dube, a student at the institution, described an atmosphere of intense anxiety as the sounds of the assault echoed through the campus grounds. This latest breach of security has raised significant questions regarding the safety of students living in the surrounding Heipang vicinity. According to witnesses, the sudden nature of the shooting left residents with little time to seek adequate cover, highlighting the vulnerability of the semi-rural settlements bordering the school.
Lethal Ambush Reported in Riyom Local Government Area
In a separate but equally violent incident earlier that same evening, a 27-year-old man identified as Amos Monday was killed in the Riyom Local Government Area. The victim was traveling with a group of youths between Baten village and Du’a village when they were ambushed by armed men at approximately 8:15 p.m. While other members of the group managed to survive the encounter, Monday was fatally targeted during the brief but deadly confrontation. This localized attack underscores a pattern of predatory movement by gunmen operating in the transitional zones between rural wards.
