Simultaneous Attacks Target Riyom and Barkin Ladi

Violence has once again erupted in Plateau State, with coordinated strikes targeting the Shonun community in Riyom and the Hurum village in the Gashish District of Barkin Ladi. Reports indicate that four individuals were killed in Hurum, while two others lost their lives in Shonun. The attacks, which occurred overnight, have left at least eight others with severe injuries, further destabilizing a region already struggling with long-term displacement and ethnic tensions.

Superior Firepower Overwhelms Local Defense

According to Tengong Rwang, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, the assailants arrived on foot and were equipped with sophisticated weaponry. While local vigilante groups attempted to defend their communities, they were reportedly outgunned by the attackers. This disparity in firepower resulted in a swift escalation of casualties and forced many residents to abandon their homes in search of safety in larger neighboring towns.

Allegations of Ignored Security Warnings

Community leaders have expressed deep frustration over what they describe as a failure of intelligence and proactive policing. Rwang claimed that residents of Shonun had flagged the arrival of "strange movements" and unfamiliar herders being transported into the area via trucks over the past week. Despite these reports being funneled to security units stationed in the vicinity, residents allege that no visible defensive measures were taken, prompting many families to evacuate women and children days before the actual assault.
