Orange Warnings and Regional Impacts
MetService has elevated the threat level for several regions, issuing orange heavy rain warnings for Taranaki, Buller, the Grey District, and the headwaters of Canterbury’s lakes and rivers. Projections indicate that the Canterbury headwaters could see up to 150mm of rainfall, while Buller and Grey may receive 120mm. Residents in these areas are advised that streams and rivers could rise without warning, and the saturated ground increases the likelihood of slips. Further south, a strong wind watch is in effect for the Canterbury High Country, where northwesterly gales are expected to persist until Saturday morning.
Disruption to Major Sporting Fixtures
Sports fans across the country will need to adjust their plans as the low-pressure system settles over New Zealand.
NRL: Those attending the Warriors game on Saturday evening in Auckland are urged to pack ponchos and umbrellas, as heavy, thundery rain is forecast to hit the city.
Super Rugby Pacific: While the Blues v Highlanders match at Eden Park on Friday may escape the worst of the system, the Chiefs v Hurricanes clash at FMG Stadium Waikato on Saturday is likely to be a wet affair, with rain scheduled to arrive in Hamilton in the afternoon.
