Regional Impacts and Emergency Declarations
While the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty are expected to be the hardest hit, forecasters warn that no part of the North Island will be entirely spared. The declaration in Northland grants officials the power to order mandatory evacuations, close critical roading networks, and requisition emergency supplies. Authorities have emphasized that the early declaration is a precautionary measure to ensure community safety before the storm's core arrives late Saturday night.
"A Multi-Hazard System": Winds, Rain, and Swells
MetService meteorologist John Law described Vaianu as a "multi-hazard" system. Key forecast features include:
Destructive Winds: Gusts are expected to reach 140 km/h in the Coromandel. MetService warns of a "threat to life" from flying debris and falling trees.
Extreme Rainfall: Some areas, particularly the Auckland region and the Coromandel ranges, could receive over a month's worth of rain (upwards of 200mm) in just 12 hours.
