Presidential Intervention and Strategic Security Briefing

Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State held a high-level, closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja to address the deteriorating security situation in the North-Central region. During the session, Muftwang provided a firsthand account of the "barbaric" terrorist attack that occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, which left over a dozen residents dead. In response, President Tinubu approved additional, specific security measures to be deployed in conjunction with federal forces. The Governor indicated that this meeting represents a "decisive turning point" in the administration’s approach to Plateau’s security, shifting from reactive posturing to proactive, intelligence-led interventions.

Restoring Order Amidst Lingering Volatility

Despite the restoration of general normalcy in Jos, the situation remains fragile. Governor Muftwang disclosed that a brief disruption occurred on Wednesday morning when looters attempted to exploit the aftermath of the tragedy. However, a coordinated response by security agencies successfully quelled the disturbances by noon. A temporary curfew was imposed and subsequently relaxed to allow for essential movement between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The Governor emphasized that while the identities and specific motives of the attackers remain under investigation, the state is treating the incident strictly as an act of criminality and terrorism that transcends religious justifications.

Civic Outrage and Calls for Political Will

The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) has issued a stinging rebuke of the federal government’s security record, following the killing of approximately 30 residents in the Anguwan Rukuba area. Cap’n Dr. Joseph Oteri stated that the recurring violence is a tragic indication of a failure to protect the sanctity of human life. The group warned the government against "treating Nigerian lives with kid gloves" and playing politics with national security. NAS and other civil society organizations are demanding that the presidency move beyond public commiserations and demonstrate the genuine political will required to dismantle the terror networks operating across the state.
