The Technical Foundation of a Reformist Minister

The trajectory of Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo from his early education in Oyin Akoko to his current role as Minister of Interior reflects a deliberate focus on technical and intellectual depth. After graduating with distinction in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of North London, he pursued a Master’s degree in Digital Communication and Networking. His background includes eighteen professional certifications, notably as a certified ethical hacker in the United Kingdom. This specialized training has provided him with a systems-oriented mindset, allowing him to diagnose institutional vulnerabilities and implement digital solutions within the Nigerian government.

From Private Sector Leadership to Legislative Impact

Before entering the political arena, Tunji-Ojo established himself as a strategic professional, becoming the CEO of Matrix IT Solutions Limited at age 24. For nearly two decades, he consulted for major entities such as the World Bank and the NNPC, gaining insight into bureaucratic inefficiencies. His transition to the House of Representatives in 2019 saw him represent the Akoko North East and North West Federal Constituency with analytical rigor. As Chairman of the House Committee on the NDDC, he was instrumental in advancing accountability and reform, eventually earning re-election before joining President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet in August 2023.

Automating the Nigerian Passport System

One of the most visible successes under Tunji-Ojo’s leadership has been the comprehensive reengineering of Nigeria’s passport application process. Historically plagued by corruption and extreme delays, the system was transformed through the introduction of automation and centralized monitoring. By reducing human interference and allowing real-time tracking of applications, the ministry enforced strict accountability for its officers. According to reports from his media team, these reforms significantly reduced national frustration and even drew international interest, with the United States reportedly studying aspects of the new Nigerian model.
