A Community Left Defenseless Against Armed Militia
Fresh accusations of military abandonment have surfaced following a lethal night raid on Mbwelle village in the Bokkos Local Government Area. A female survivor, who suffered the loss of eight family members, claimed that despite the village being less than three kilometers from a military station, no soldiers arrived to halt the carnage. According to Mfonobong Daniel, the assault lasted for over two hours as suspected Fulani militia moved through the community, opening fire on residents and setting homes ablaze without any resistance from state security.
The Human Toll of Operational Failure
The brutality of the invasion was underscored by the survivor’s account of the specific victims targeted within her household. Among the dead were her father, brothers, young nephews, and a pregnant woman, all of whom were killed as the assailants reportedly shouted religious slogans. According to the grieving witness, the failure of the Operation Ensuring Peace task force to respond to immediate distress calls from youths and elders has left the survivors in a state of profound betrayal and mourning.
Allegations of Protective Bias for Assailants
The controversy deepened with claims that security forces may have inadvertently or intentionally facilitated the safety of the attackers. The survivor alleged that after the massacre, the militia retreated to Korong, a settlement previously seized from its original inhabitants. According to the report, community members later discovered a military gun truck positioned at the entrance of Korong, effectively providing a security perimeter for the area where the killers had sought refuge while the victims in Mbwelle remained exposed.
