Supreme Court Clarifies Party Membership Status

Speaking on Arise Television’s "Morning Show" on Saturday, May 2, 2026, PDP chieftain Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse addressed the legal outcomes of two critical cases recently decided by the Supreme Court. While acknowledging that a ruling regarding the validity of the Ibadan convention did not favor his faction, Pearse emphasized the significance of the second ruling. In that case, the apex court upheld the expulsion of Sam Anyanwu and several others from the party. Pearse argued that this decision effectively removes the legal standing of the rival Turaki-led faction, as its key figures are no longer recognized as members of the PDP.

Constitutional Transition of Power

With the legal removal of Anyanwu from the party hierarchy, Pearse outlined the constitutional steps the PDP will take to prevent a leadership vacuum. According to the party’s internal statutes, the Board of Trustees (BoT) is empowered to step in and function as the National Working Committee (NWC) during such transitions. Pearse noted that the BoT is expected to act swiftly, with plans to nominate a temporary NWC within 48 hours. This interim body will be tasked with steering the party through the upcoming electoral cycle and restoring administrative order.

Reactions from Party Factions

The Supreme Court’s judgment has elicited varied interpretations from different wings of the party. While the Delta State chapter and prominent figures like Nyesom Wike have suggested the ruling proves the party remains a single entity, the Turaki-led faction has argued that the decision creates a dangerous leadership vacuum. Conversely, the Enugu State PDP chairman described the situation as a "no victor, no vanquished" scenario, calling for total party unity. Pearse’s comments aim to counter the narrative of instability by asserting that the judicial intervention has actually settled long-standing disputes over legitimate membership.
