Judicial Finality Ends Internal Party Schism

The long standing leadership dispute within the Peoples Democratic Party has reached a conclusive end following a landmark decision by the Supreme Court. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, announced during a press briefing that the apex court has effectively dismantled the internal opposition known as the Turaki faction. According to Wike, the judgment dismissed multiple appeals filed by the dissenting group, including challenges to previous rulings involving Sule Lamido and other party members. By setting aside the alternative convention held in Ibadan and validating the Abuja convention, the court has officially recognized the PDP as a single, unified entity under the leadership of National Chairman Abdulrahman.

Validation of Constitutional Party Procedures

The Minister emphasized that the court’s ruling serves as a vital reminder that political power does not exempt party leaders from adhering to the rule of law. Wike noted that the Turaki group’s attempts to bypass the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act were found to be legally unsound by the Supreme Court. According to the Minister, the validation of the national convention also serves to nullify any purported suspensions of party officials previously announced by the rival faction. By allowing these individuals to participate in and be elected during a recognized convention, the party has constitutionally restored its internal governance structure.

Strategic Distancing from Opposition Coalitions

In light of the party's newly solidified status, Wike clarified that the PDP is not participating in ongoing coalition talks involving other political figures. While acknowledging that some colleagues, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, are exploring realignments, Wike maintained that the PDP remains the primary opposition party and will operate independently. He characterized the party’s approach as constructive opposition, focused on holding the ruling government accountable rather than engaging in destructive political maneuvers. According to the Minister, the party will not collaborate with the group led by Atiku Abubakar to form a broad based opposition front.
