Constitutional Intervention to Prevent Leadership Vacuum

The Board of Trustees, or BoT, of the Peoples Democratic Party has officially assumed the national leadership of the party. BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara stated that the board is acting as the second highest organ of the party to stabilize the organization following a series of legal setbacks. This intervention is based on Section 32 (5) of the PDP Constitution, which allows the BoT to step in during periods of structural crisis. The board aims to provide "constitutional remedial steps" to ensure the party remains functional and capable of meeting statutory obligations under the Electoral Act of 2026.

Supreme Court Invalidates Successive Party Conventions

The takeover was necessitated by a Supreme Court ruling that nullified the results of the 15th to 16th November 2025 National Convention held in Ibadan. That convention had produced the National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. Additionally, the apex court upheld the suspensions of key officials, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Hon. Umar Bature. Because these officials were deemed ineligible to act, the court further ruled that the subsequent March 29, 2026 Convention in Abuja and the leadership of Acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed are also null and void.

Immediate Administrative and Strategic Directives

With both the Turaki led and Mohammed led factions now legally invalidated, the BoT has directed all party staff at the National Secretariat to resume duties under the board's direct supervision. Senator Wabara emphasized that this is a temporary measure designed to pilot party affairs until a formal interim body can be established. The board’s primary focus is to ensure the PDP adheres to the timelines set for the 2027 general elections, ensuring that the party remains a viable platform for candidates seeking elective positions across the country.
