A Graphic Violation Of Human Rights
The Nigerian digital space has been engulfed in grief and anger following the release of a graphic video documenting the final moments of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. In the footage, which lasts less than two minutes, the 28-year-old suspect is seen sitting on the ground with his hands bound behind his back. Ogidi is heard pleading for his life in Pidgin English, promising to lead the officers to an associate in Sapele who he claimed had deceived him. "Officers, abeg, I go tell you everything," he urged, shortly before a plainclothes officer cocked his rifle and fired at point-blank range.
Institutional Breach Of Standard Operating Procedures
The Delta State Police Command has officially identified the officer in the video as ASP Nuhu Usman. According to the police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, the shooting was a flagrant violation of Force Order 237 and the established Standard Operating Procedures of the Nigeria Police Force. The victim, who was reportedly apprehended after attempting to ship a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition, was under the control of the Effurun Area Command at the time of his death. The transition from apprehension to execution was captured by bystanders, leaving little room for administrative ambiguity regarding the breach of conduct.
Escalation To Force Headquarters In Abuja
Following a directive from the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ASP Usman was promptly arrested and moved from the Effurun Area Command to the State Headquarters in Asaba. Given the severity of the incident and the clear video evidence, the case has been further escalated to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The officer has been queried and is slated to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, which is currently in session. This committee will determine the administrative sanctions and the timeline for formal criminal prosecution.
