Outrage Over the Killing of Oghenemine Million Ogidi
The Nigerian entertainment community is in mourning and a state of high alert following the brutal killing of a young singer, Oghenemine Million Ogidi, in Delta State. A viral video depicting the gruesome incident has sparked nationwide condemnation. Veteran actor Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, popularly known as Kanayo O. Kanayo (KOK), joined the chorus of voices demanding justice. KOK, who was filming on location in Delta State when he saw the footage, described the act as heart-wrenching and noted that the victim’s desperate pleas for his life were ignored by the trigger-happy officer identified as Usman Nuhu.
Safety Concerns for Nollywood Actors
Beyond the immediate tragedy, Kanayo O. Kanayo raised a specific alarm regarding the safety of actors and film crews. He noted that many Nollywood productions utilize both real and replica firearms to achieve realism on screen. KOK questioned what would happen to an actor if they encountered a volatile officer like Nuhu while carrying such props. He asserted that "actors are not safe" in the current climate and issued a stern memo to his colleagues. He advised all actors and production houses to ensure they possess valid licenses and police permits for all firearms used on set and to carry these documents at all times.
Demands for Judicial Accountability and Reform
The veteran actor did not mince words regarding the legal consequences for the officer involved. Calling the act "pure murder," KOK appealed directly to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure the stiffest possible punishment. Public sentiment mirrored the actor’s anger, with many social media commentators calling for "jungle justice" or public execution to match the public nature of the singer's killing. Others suggested that the entire police crew present during the incident should be held liable for failing to restrain their colleague.
