Tragedy Strikes a Large North Charlotte Gathering

A violent escalation at a weekend social event has left one young man dead and several others recovering from gunshot wounds. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon early Sunday evening in the 5900 block of Hucks Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene involving approximately 50 young adults who had been attending what investigators are describing as a party gone wrong. The location, situated near the intersection of Interstate 485 and Old Statesville Road, became a crime scene as police worked to secure the area and identify those involved in the exchange of gunfire.

Identification of the Deceased and Initial Response

The victim who lost his life at the scene has been identified as 20 year old Richard Jeddiah Thomas. According to CMPD Maj. Gene Lim, the young man was found behind the residence having already succumbed to his injuries. The initial responding officers were met with a high volume of attendees, primarily ranging from high school to college age, fleeing the vicinity. The sheer number of people present at the time of the shooting has complicated the early stages of the investigation, as detectives work to interview witnesses and piece together the timeline of the evening.

Emergency Medical Transport and Self Reporting Victims

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, two additional victims, one male and one female, were located and transported by emergency medical services to a local hospital. Fortunately, their injuries were classified as non life threatening. As the evening progressed, investigators discovered that the casualty count was higher than initially realized. Two more individuals were identified as having been struck by gunfire, including one person who independently sought medical attention at a nearby facility. This brings the total count of wounded survivors to four, all of whom are expected to recover from their physical injuries.
