Statistical Improvement in Road Safety Metrics Across Ogun State

Road safety statistics in Ogun State have shown a notable improvement during the first three months of 2026, according to the latest data released by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Between January and March, the state recorded 80 fatalities resulting from road crashes, a decrease compared to the 98 deaths reported in the first quarter of 2025. This downward trend extended to injury rates as well, which dropped from 488 last year to 366 in the current review period. Sector Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin attributed these gains to heightened enforcement protocols and strategic safety measures deployed across the state’s major transport corridors.

Decreased Victim Involvement Amidst Stricter Enforcement

The total number of individuals involved in road accidents also saw a significant reduction, falling from 1,582 in early 2025 to 1,172 in 2026. Corps Commander Fasakin highlighted these figures during the First Quarter Durbar and award ceremony, suggesting that the "heightened enforcement" strategy is successfully reducing the severity and frequency of multi-person accidents. However, the data indicates that while the physical toll of accidents is diminishing, the underlying behavior of motorists remains a primary challenge for the command.

Sharp Increase in Traffic Offenses and Apprehensions

Despite the drop in fatalities, the FRSC reported a worrying "surge" in detected traffic violations. The number of recorded offenses jumped from 7,647 in 2025 to 11,717 in 2026. Correspondingly, the number of motorists apprehended by the corps rose from 6,822 to 9,661 within the same three-month window. This 41% increase in apprehensions underscores an aggressive push by the Sector Command to penalize reckless driving, speeding, and vehicle documentation defaults before they escalate into fatal collisions.
