A Costly Vehicle Burglary in Worthington

The Nobles County Fifth District Court has initiated proceedings against a North Branch man following a smash-and-grab theft that resulted in thousands of dollars in damages and losses. The case began on August 27, when Worthington Police responded to a report of a vehicle burglary. Officers found a shattered passenger window and a partially dismantled dashboard. The victim reported that a wallet containing $600 in cash, personal identification, and various bank cards had been removed from the vehicle. Repair estimates for the vehicle damage alone reached $1,703.71.

Digital Evidence and Gas Station Surveillance

A breakthrough in the investigation occurred when police reviewed bank records associated with the stolen cards. One of the cards was flagged for use at a gas station in Windom. Upon reviewing the station's security footage, investigators reportedly observed Eh Klersay Baw exiting his vehicle and conducting a transaction at the exact time the stolen card was used. According to law enforcement records, nearly $4,000 in unauthorized charges were applied to the victim's card within a single hour of the initial theft.

The Suspect's Statement and Prior Convictions

On September 1, Baw contacted the police to address the investigation. While he confirmed that he was the individual appearing in the gas station surveillance video, he claimed he was merely "borrowing" the card to purchase gasoline. However, the volume of charges documented by the bank and the circumstances of the vehicle break-in led prosecutors to pursue felony counts. Baw is currently facing charges of transaction card fraud and receiving stolen property. Notably, court records indicate that Baw has a prior felony conviction for receiving stolen property out of Ramsey County.
