Cultural Identity as a Strategic Unifier
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has formally adopted culture as a primary instrument for fostering regional stability and social cohesion. During the recent Niger Delta Arts and Culture Expo held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the commission detailed its commitment to preserving the diverse heritage of the region’s ethnic nationalities. The event, themed around the rhythmic heartbeat of the people, served as a high-level platform for stakeholders to engage in dialogue centered on collective identity. According to Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of the NDDC, this initiative is designed to bridge historical divides by highlighting the shared artistic expressions that bind the various states of the Niger Delta together.
The Resilience of Tradition in a Technological Era
Representing the Managing Director, Apostle Abasiandikan Nkono noted that the vibrant displays of traditional music and dance witnessed at the Expo prove that indigenous culture remains the "soul of the people." Despite the rapid advancement of global technology, the commission maintains that local heritage cannot be diminished and remains the most effective medium for advancing harmony. The Expo showcased a wide array of artistic expressions, from ancestral dance forms to contemporary rhythmic performances, all aimed at reinforcing social bonds. Officials argued that by celebrating these unique traditions, the region can project a unified front that transcends individual state boundaries.
Shifting the Institutional Narrative Through Development
The cultural summit comes at a time when the NDDC is actively seeking to reframe its public image through a series of visible developmental strides. Dr. Ogbuku, through a statement by Director of Corporate Affairs Seledi Thompson-Wakama, highlighted that the commission's story has changed from one of stagnation to one of active project completion. This shift has reportedly earned the commission commendations from the highest levels of government, including President Bola Tinubu. By successfully hosting large-scale events like the Niger Delta Games in Edo State and now the Culture Expo in Akwa Ibom, the NDDC is attempting to demonstrate its capacity for both physical and social engineering.
