The Violent Theft of a Commercial Towing Vehicle
A routine vehicle recovery operation turned into a chaotic public safety emergency on Monday afternoon in Gloucester County. According to Washington Township police, a tow truck operator had stopped his vehicle near a Dollar General store on Delsea Drive to secure a car onto his flatbed. During this process, a man identified as Dylan Davis allegedly seized the opportunity to climb into the driver’s seat of the idling truck. As Davis accelerated away erratically, the original operator was thrown from the vehicle, sustaining injuries as the heavy machinery sped onto the main roadway.
Head On Collisions and Oncoming Traffic Risks
The situation escalated rapidly as the stolen tow truck entered the flow of traffic near the intersection of Delsea Drive and Salina Road. Authorities report that Davis drove the large vehicle directly into oncoming lanes, creating a high speed hazard for unsuspecting commuters. The tow truck eventually struck two separate passenger vehicles head on, resulting in significant structural damage and trapping the occupants within their cars. The force of the impact brought the stolen truck to a halt, at which point the suspect abandoned the wreckage and attempted to evade capture by running from the scene.
Emergency Medical Response and Victim Status
First responders arrived at the crash site around 1:49 p.m. to find a scene of significant destruction. The drivers of the two vehicles struck by Davis were treated by paramedics for various injuries before being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. Additionally, the tow truck operator required medical attention for the injuries sustained when he was forced from his vehicle during the initial carjacking. While the specific conditions of the victims have not been detailed, police confirmed that all three individuals required professional medical intervention following the suspect's actions.
