Initiation of the Pursuit in Central Lubbock
A routine patrol in central Lubbock escalated into a high-stakes pursuit shortly after midnight on Sunday. According to the Lubbock Police Department, an officer observed a pickup truck operating in a reckless manner within the 2700 block of 56th Street at approximately 12:38 a.m. When the officer activated emergency lights to conduct a standard traffic stop, the driver reportedly accelerated and refused to yield. This non-compliance prompted the officer to initiate a formal pursuit through the residential sector.
Collision With Property and Residence
The chase reached a destructive conclusion within the 3100 block of 58th Street. During the attempt to elude law enforcement, the driver lost control of the pickup and collided with an unoccupied vehicle parked along the roadway. The momentum of the crash subsequently forced the truck into a nearby residence, causing structural impact to the home. Despite the severity of the collisions, the Lubbock Police Department confirmed that no injuries were reported among the occupants of the home or the individuals involved in the chase.
Apprehension and Chemical Testing
The driver, identified as 23 year old Lundun Mata, was taken into custody immediately following the termination of the pursuit. Upon interacting with the suspect, officers noted signs of impairment, leading to further investigation into his sobriety. Mata was subsequently transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center where he was officially processed. The suspect is currently facing a trio of charges: reckless driving, evading arrest with a vehicle, and driving while intoxicated.
