A Tragic Escalation of Communal Violence in Udege
The Nasarawa State Police Command has officially launched a comprehensive manhunt for the individuals responsible for a deadly communal clash that erupted in the Udege Development Area. The violence, which broke out in the early hours of Friday, April 3, 2024, claimed at least 11 lives and left a trail of architectural destruction across several farming communities. Preliminary reports suggest that the conflict was a reprisal attack following the earlier reported killing of two individuals in the area. The rapid escalation highlights the volatile nature of communal tensions in the region and the urgent need for a sustained security presence to prevent further cycles of violence.
Commissioner Evaluates Destruction in Akyawa and Udege Kasa
Commissioner of Police CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed conducted an on-site evaluation of the affected communities, specifically Akyawa and Udege Kasa. During the visit, he observed that approximately 50 houses had been set ablaze in Akyawa, while two additional structures were destroyed in Udege Kasa. The Commissioner expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families, describing the loss of innocent lives and the destruction of property as an "unfortunate and tragic incident." The visit served to provide a firsthand assessment of the humanitarian crisis and to reassure the surviving residents that the state is committed to their protection.
Deployment of Tactical Teams and Multi Agency Collaboration
In immediate response to the killings, CP Mohammed ordered the deployment of specialized tactical teams and investigative units to track down and apprehend the hoodlums involved. To ensure a robust and comprehensive security framework, the police are currently collaborating with the Nigerian military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). This inter-agency cooperation is aimed at saturating the area with personnel to deter any further attacks. Proactive measures have been implemented to restore peace, including the establishment of temporary checkpoints and increased motorized patrols along the major transit routes within the Udege Development Area.
