Nighttime Ambush in West Ridge

Chicago police are investigating an attempted robbery that turned violent late Wednesday night in the West Ridge neighborhood (also known as West Rogers Park). According to investigators, a 48-year-old man was walking in the 6400 block of North Campbell Avenue around 10:06 p.m. when he was approached by an unidentified male suspect. The suspect demanded the victim's property at gunpoint, sparking a confrontation in the quiet residential area.

Victim’s Cry for Help Leads to Gunfire

The situation escalated when the victim began shouting for help. In response to the vocal resistance, the suspect opened fire in the victim's direction. The 48-year-old was struck once in the right arm. Following the shooting, the assailant fled the scene without successfully taking any of the man’s belongings. First responders arrived shortly after and transported the victim to a nearby hospital. Medical officials stated the man's injuries are not life-threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

A Violent Night for the North Side

The West Ridge shooting was the first of two high-profile violent incidents on the North Side Wednesday night. Just a few hours later, an 18-year-old woman was shot and killed near Loyola Beach in the Rogers Park neighborhood. While the two locations are geographically close, the Chicago Police Department has not released any evidence suggesting the crimes are related. The proximity and timing, however, have heightened safety concerns among residents in the 24th (Rogers Park) Police District.
