Strategic Convoy Sighted in Bamako
Mali’s military capabilities have received a significant boost following the arrival of a major shipment of equipment from China. A large convoy was observed moving through Bamako on April 9, transporting high-tech weaponry from the Guinean port of Conakry toward northern military bases. This delivery is the latest in a series of strategic acquisitions intended to modernize the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) as they continue to address regional security challenges.
Arrival of the Yitian-L Air Defence System
The centerpiece of this latest shipment is the Norinco Yitian-L short-range air defence (SHORAD) system. Mounted on highly mobile Dongfeng Mengshi vehicles, the Yitian-L is specifically designed to counter low-flying threats such as drones, helicopters, and aircraft. The system utilizes TY-90 missiles with an operational range of up to 6 kilometres and features an integrated radar with an 18-kilometre detection radius. Previously, Mauritania was the only known regional operator of this specific agile configuration, making Mali’s acquisition a notable shift in West African air defence parity.
Expanding the Armoured Fleet
The April convoy also included a variety of support and tactical vehicles, such as BeiBen tactical trucks, fuel tankers, and recovery units. This follows previous deliveries throughout late 2025 and early 2026 that introduced VN22 armoured vehicles, SR-5 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), and CS/VP14 APCs to the Malian inventory. Reports indicate that Mali is in the process of acquiring a total of 160 armoured vehicles from China’s Norinco, covering everything from fire support to troop transport.
