The Sudden Collapse of Kidal’s Defenses

Jihadist forces and allied Tuareg separatists have successfully seized the northern strategic hub of Kidal, dealing a catastrophic blow to the Malian military junta. Local sources confirmed on Monday that the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) orchestrated a coordinated dawn offensive that overwhelmed government positions. Residents reported seeing Malian soldiers and their Russian mercenary counterparts from the Wagner Group evacuating the town, which the military had only just retaken in November 2023.

Assassination of the Defense Minister

The military government is currently reeling from the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a 47 year old central figure in the ruling junta. Camara was killed on Saturday when a car bomb targeted his residence in the garrison town of Kati. The explosion also claimed the lives of his second wife and two grandchildren. In response to the loss of this high ranking official, the state has declared two days of national mourning while a security source confirmed that military ruler General Assimi Goita has been moved to a safe location.

A Broad Tactical Offensive on the Capital

The weekend’s violence was not limited to the north, as multiple strategic locations around the capital city of Bamako were simultaneously targeted. Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maiga characterized the strikes as a direct attempt to dismantle the institutions of the state and seize power. While the capital remained in a state of fragile calm by Monday morning, reports of loud explosions near the international airport and a heavy military presence around Kati suggest that the threat to the seat of government remains active and unresolved.
