Strategic Strikes Paralyze the Malian Capital
Early on Saturday, April 25, coordinated explosions and sustained gunfire erupted near the Kati military camp and Modibo Keïta International Airport, signaling a major security breach near the seat of power. The assault, characterized by its high level of organization, saw militants on motorbikes moving freely on the outskirts of Bamako in broad daylight. While the Malian army eventually claimed to have repelled the attackers, the scale of the violence forced authorities to impose strict curfews and seal off major transport arteries.
Assassination of Defense Minister in Kati
The instability reached the highest levels of the military government following a suicide bombing at the residence of Defense Minister Sadio Camara. The minister died as a result of the blast, marking a significant blow to the ruling junta’s leadership during the ongoing crisis. Despite the severity of the situation and the loss of a top official, the head of the military government, Assimi Goita, has not made a public appearance or issued a statement since the violence began.
Militant Alliance Asserts Northern Control
The offensive was carried out by a coalition consisting of the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). This alliance claimed to have seized critical northern locations, including the town of Tessit, where local troops reportedly surrendered their weapons. The militants later displayed captured hardware, including Russian armored personnel carriers and a Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicle station, further illustrating the operational shift in the northern regions.
