Addressing the Care Gap in Adult ADHD
The landscape of adult ADHD treatment in Germany is currently defined by a significant disparity between the rising number of diagnoses and the availability of specialized care. According to registry data, the number of adults diagnosed with the disorder has tripled since 2015, yet many remain without access to guideline-compliant psychosocial interventions. To address this shortage, researchers from GAIA and multiple German university medical centers investigated the effectiveness of attexis, a digital therapy system designed to deliver cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) through an automated platform.
Clinical Outcomes of the Randomized Controlled Trial
The trial enrolled 337 adults with confirmed ADHD diagnoses to evaluate the impact of the digital intervention when used alongside traditional treatment as usual. According to the findings published in Psychological Medicine, participants who used the digital platform for three months experienced a statistically significant reduction in symptom severity compared to the control group. The researchers noted that the effect sizes observed were comparable to those typically achieved through face-to-face psychotherapy, marking a major milestone in the validation of digital mental health tools.
Secondary Benefits for Social and Occupational Functioning
Beyond the primary reduction in core ADHD symptoms, the study measured various secondary outcomes that impact the daily lives of patients. According to the research team, users of the digital intervention showed marked improvements in work performance, social interaction, and overall quality of life. Additionally, the data revealed a notable reduction in depressive symptoms among the intervention group, suggesting that the mindfulness-based techniques and CBT strategies provided by the platform offer broad psychological support for those navigating the complexities of the disorder in adulthood.
