Gunfire Erupts During Transit Altercation
A routine evening commute in Lexington turned chaotic Wednesday when a dispute between passengers escalated into a shooting inside a moving Lextran bus. According to the Lexington Police Department, 49-year-old Paris Hilliard was traveling near La Salle Road and Asbury Road when she allegedly produced a firearm during a physical or verbal confrontation with two other riders. The situation reached a breaking point when Hilliard reportedly aimed the weapon upward and discharged a round directly into the roof of the vehicle, sending panicked passengers scrambling for safety.
Extreme Indifference to Human Life Cited
The legal repercussions for the discharge are severe, as responding officers charged Hilliard with eight counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. In the formal arrest citation, investigators noted that the suspect’s actions manifested an extreme indifference to the value of human life. By firing a lethal weapon in a confined space occupied by eight bystanders, authorities maintain that Hilliard created a substantial and immediate danger of death or serious physical injury to the public. Despite the high potential for tragedy, police confirmed that the projectile remained lodged in the vehicle structure and caused no physical injuries.
Police Interception and Weapon Recovery
Officers were dispatched to the intersection of La Salle and Asbury roads immediately following reports of shots fired on the transit line. Upon arrival, law enforcement successfully detained Hilliard and conducted a sweep of the scene, which resulted in the recovery of the firearm used in the incident. The transit bus was taken out of service to allow forensic teams to document the ballistic damage and collect evidence from the interior. Lextran officials have not yet commented on whether the suspect was a regular commuter or if there were prior security concerns involving the specific route.
