Severe Injuries Reported in Downtown Pedestrian Strike
A chaotic scene unfolded in downtown Lexington early Sunday morning when a vehicle reportedly plowed into a crowd of bystanders. According to official citations from the Lexington Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. near the corner of Short Street and Mill Street. Responding officers observed the driver operating the vehicle with what they described as an extreme indifference to human life, leading to the injury of four pedestrians. Emergency responders noted that the injuries sustained by the victims were significant enough to be classified as potentially life threatening.
Police Intervention and Suspect Apprehension
Following the initial collision with the group of pedestrians, the driver allegedly continued her flight by traveling the wrong direction down Short Street. Officers on the scene were able to successfully intercept and stop the vehicle before further harm could occur. Upon making contact with the driver, identified as twenty year old Kaydence A. Carpenter, authorities noted immediate physical indicators of severe impairment. The arresting officers reported that the suspect exhibited slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and a distinct odor of alcohol, leading to her immediate detention and transport for further testing.
Standardized Sobriety Testing and Underage Violations
Once transported to the Fayette County Detention Center, the suspect participated in a standardized field sobriety test administered by correctional officers. The results of these evaluations allegedly confirmed a high level of intoxication, a finding compounded by the fact that the suspect is under the legal drinking age of twenty one. During a search of her person, investigators located a fake identification card alongside her valid driver's license. These discoveries have led to additional scrutiny regarding how the suspect obtained alcohol prior to the violent encounter in the parking lot.
