Allegations of Political Victimization in Kwara

The political tension in Kwara State has escalated following accusations that the executive branch is weaponizing a past national tragedy. During a news conference on Friday, the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spokesperson, Olusegun Adewara, alleged that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is attempting to "resurrect" the 2018 Offa robbery case. The party claims this is a calculated effort to frame their leader, former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, ahead of future electoral contests.

Governor’s Administration Responds via Judicial Channels

In a brief but direct response to the allegations, the Governor's Special Adviser on Media, Alh. Bashir Adigun, maintained that the executive would not engage in a media war over the issue. According to the administration, the matter is already active within the court system. Adigun suggested that Dr. Saraki should present his defense and arguments before the judiciary rather than through public press statements, as the legal process is currently underway.

Historical Context of the Offa Robbery Case

The PDP’s defense rests on previous legal advisories issued during the initial investigation of the tragic event. According to the party, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation issued advisories in 2018 stating there was no evidence linking Saraki to the crime. They reminded the public that the actual suspects were prosecuted and convicted at the trial court, with the judgments upheld at the appellate level. The case is currently pending before the Supreme Court.
