A Quintessential Ekiti Indigene Remembered
The late pioneer Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos West, Bishop Awelewa Adebiyi, was recently honored during the public presentation of his biography, My Name is Peter. Former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, described the late cleric as a "quintessential Ekiti indigene" who dedicated his life to the progress of the church and the Nigerian nation. Fayemi highlighted Adebiyi’s resilience, recalling a traumatic armed robbery attack the Bishop survived, which notably failed to deter his commitment to humanitarian work and spiritual leadership.
The Launch of the Bishop Adebiyi Foundation
Beyond the literary celebration, the event served as the official inauguration of the Bishop Adebiyi Foundation. This new institution is specifically designed to support and advance theological education across Nigeria, mirroring the late Bishop’s lifelong passion for academic excellence among the clergy. During his tenure, Adebiyi was widely credited with transforming the lives of his subordinates by encouraging and facilitating their return to school for postgraduate studies, a legacy the foundation aims to sustain.
Documenting a Monumental Life
The 320-page book was authored by veteran journalists Dare Babarinsa and Wole Adeyemo. Reviewing the work, the Bishop of Ilesa Diocese, Rt. Rev. Prof. Dapo Asaju, emphasized the critical importance of documenting historical figures. "Knowledge that is not documented will perish," Asaju noted, praising the authors for ensuring that Adebiyi’s monumental contributions to the Anglican Communion remain "ever present" for future generations. The book details his rise from a humble background to becoming one of the most influential bishops in the world.
