Emergency Funding for Critical Water Infrastructure
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved a major financial intervention totaling N21.29 billion aimed at rehabilitating the state’s primary water treatment facilities. The decision follows a period of severe water scarcity that has affected millions of residents in the Kano metropolis. Acting Commissioner of Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, confirmed on Thursday that the funds are specifically earmarked for the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants, as well as the restoration of raw water pump stations. This investment is being characterized as one of the most substantial financial commitments to the state’s utility sector in recent history.
Breakdown of Project Allocations
The N21.29 billion expenditure is divided into two primary segments to address specific localized failures:
Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant: N9.9 billion has been allocated for the rehabilitation of this plant and the restoration of its raw water pump station.
Challawa and Goron Dutse Facilities: N11.39 billion is dedicated to the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Treatment Plant, which also includes the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs.
