Emergency Funding for Critical Infrastructure Recovery
In a decisive move to combat persistent water shortages, the Kano State government has committed over ₦21 billion toward the modernization of its primary water processing hubs. According to Dahiru Muhammad,Hashim, the acting commissioner for water resources, this financial intervention is designed to address the catastrophic decline in utility performance. The funding is split between two major operational zones, with ₦9.9 billion specifically earmarked for the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and its associated raw water pump station to reverse years of operational decay.
Restoring the Tamburawa Production Thresholds
The Tamburawa facility, originally engineered to deliver 150 million liters of water daily, is currently struggling to reach even a third of its intended output. Since 2022, severe flooding has caused extensive damage to the raw water intake systems, leaving the plant operating at a meager 27 percent capacity. The newly approved restoration project aims to repair these structural and mechanical failures, ensuring that the facility can once again meet the high demand of the growing metropolitan population it was built to serve.
Revitalizing the Challawa and Goron Dutse Systems
A secondary but equally vital portion of the investment, totaling ₦11.39 billion, is directed toward the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Treatment Plant. This facility currently functions at less than 30 percent of its 220 million, liter daily capacity. Furthermore, the project includes the total restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs, which act as a central distribution node for the Kano metropolis. These reservoirs have been non, functional for an extended period following the targeted theft and destruction of essential components by vandals.
