Armed Confrontation on Marion Barry Avenue
A routine morning in Southeast D.C. was interrupted by a violent encounter that led to the arrest of a local teenager. According to reports from the Metropolitan Police Department, the incident began at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026, in the 2700 block of Marion Barry Avenue, Southeast. The victim was standing near her vehicle when the suspect approached her under the guise of asking for a lighter. As the victim attempted to assist him, the suspect brandished a firearm and demanded her car keys. The victim complied with the demand, and the suspect fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.
Flight Ends in High-Impact Collision
The suspect’s escape was short-lived as he lost control of the vehicle just moments after the carjacking. Investigating officers from the Seventh District reported that the stolen car struck a telephone pole, causing significant damage and disabling the vehicle. Following the impact, the suspect abandoned the car and attempted to flee the area on foot. However, responding units had already established a perimeter based on the victim’s initial report, and the suspect was located and detained by officers a short distance from the crash site.
Juvenile Suspect Facing Felony Charges
The individual taken into custody has been identified as a 16-year-old juvenile male residing in Southeast D.C. Due to the use of a firearm during the commission of the theft, he has been formally charged with Armed Carjacking. This case highlights a persistent challenge for District law enforcement regarding the involvement of minors in high-stakes violent crimes. The suspect’s transition from a pedestrian interaction to an armed robbery suggests a level of premeditation that has become a focal point for detectives working in the Seventh District.
