Voter Registration Momentum Increases Across Key Nigerian States
In its tenth weekly update for the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed that 2,657,784 Nigerians have now successfully completed the process. The update, titled “Completed Online and Physical Registration as at March 13,” indicates a robust engagement with the country's democratic infrastructure. Jigawa State emerged as the leader in regional participation with 171,471 completed registrations, followed closely by Lagos and Kano. Conversely, Anambra State recorded the lowest engagement levels during this period, with just over 21,000 completed entries.
Digital vs. Physical Participation and the Rise of the Online Registrant
A significant shift in how Nigerians interact with the electoral body was evident in the latest statistics. Out of the total 2.6 million registrants, 1,563,169 (approximately 59%) chose to complete their pre-registration using INEC’s online portals. Meanwhile, 1,094,615 Nigerians opted for the traditional physical registration at designated centers. This trend suggests a growing trust in digital government services and an attempt by the populace to avoid the long queues typically associated with physical centers.
Demographic Breakdown: Female and Youth Voters Take the Lead
The Week 10 data reveals a clear demographic shift in the voter base. Female registrants currently lead the exercise, accounting for 57% (1,508,858) of the total, while males represent 43% (1,148,926). Perhaps most strikingly, Nigeria's youth population continues to dominate the political landscape; citizens between the ages of 18 and 34 make up 68.22% of all new registrants. Occupational data further supports this youth surge, with students forming the largest single group at 24.11%, followed by those engaged in business and trade.
