Lethal Breach of the Southern Lebanon Ceasefire

Intelligence assessments from the Israel Defense Forces have confirmed that Hezbollah operatives were the perpetrators behind a fatal shooting targeting United Nations peacekeepers. The incident took place during an active ceasefire, striking a French contingent of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon as they performed routine safety operations. According to military reports, the attack resulted in the death of one soldier and left three others injured, two of whom remain in serious condition.

The Fatal Ambush in Ghandouriyeh

The military investigation conducted by the IDF determined that the assault occurred in the Ghandouriyeh area while the UNIFIL team was actively clearing unexploded ordnance from the terrain. A Hezbollah cell reportedly opened fire on the peacekeepers at close range, a move the IDF describes as a calculated violation of the ongoing truce. The specificity of the location and the nature of the task suggest that the attackers were aware of the international personnel’s presence in the sector.

French Leadership Identifies the Fallen Soldier

French President Emmanuel Macron has corroborated the findings, directly naming Hezbollah as the party responsible for what he characterized as a deliberate ambush. The slain serviceman has been identified as Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio, a member of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment. France’s armed forces minister confirmed that Montorio was killed by a direct gunshot, leading to an immediate demand from Paris for the Lebanese authorities to prosecute those involved.
