A Diplomatic Push to Preserve UNIFIL
As China assumes the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of May, its diplomatic delegation has placed the escalating situation in Lebanon at the forefront of the international agenda. On Friday, Chinese Ambassador to the UN Fu Cong publicly stated that the Security Council must reconsider its previous unanimous agreement to conclude the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) by the end of 2026. Established in 1978 to patrol the volatile southern border between Lebanon and Israel, UNIFIL's impending withdrawal was agreed upon last year. Since the escalation began in early March, more than 2,500 individuals have been killed in Israeli strikes across Lebanon. The widespread destruction of infrastructure in the southern regions has complicated the delivery of aid and raised alarms among international observers. The high casualty rate and the physical devastation of communities that UNIFIL has patrolled for decades serve as the grim backdrop to the diplomatic maneuverings in New York, a...
