Strategic Reduction In Electricity Subsidy Obligations
The Federal Government has reported a subsidy obligation of 418.79 billion Naira for the final quarter of 2025, according to the latest figures from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. This represents a significant decline of nearly 40 billion Naira compared to the 458.75 billion Naira recorded in the third quarter of the same year. The regulator noted that this 8.71% reduction reflects an ongoing effort to bridge the fiscal gap between the actual cost of generation and the allowed consumer tariffs through more targeted energy distribution.
Shift Toward Band A Energy Allocation
A primary driver for the falling subsidy figures was the strategic decision to increase energy supply to Band A customers. NERC reported that energy allocated to this premium tier rose from 40% to 45% during the fourth quarter, aligning with government objectives to prioritize supply for those on higher tariff scales. By shifting more power toward customers who pay closer to the market rate, the state has managed to reduce its total financial burden, as these consumers require less price support than those in lower supply categories.
GenCo Invoicing And Government Coverage
During the fourth quarter, government subsidies accounted for 52.30% of the total invoices issued by Generation Companies. This mark is a notable decrease from the third quarter, when the state was responsible for covering 58.63% of the total GenCo invoice. This nearly seven percentage point drop suggests that the electricity market is slowly moving toward self sufficiency, although the government remains the primary financier for more than half of the energy delivered to the national grid.
