Digital Transformation Targets Chronic Grid Monitoring Challenges
The Nigerian Independent System Operator has initiated a strategic acceleration of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system, a critical software and hardware framework designed for remote industrial monitoring. This move is intended to provide the national grid with the capacity to collect real time data from power processes, addressing long standing gaps in system oversight. Managing Director Abdul-Mohammed Bello highlighted the project as a cornerstone of the organization’s first year achievements, emphasizing its role in stabilizing the often volatile national power infrastructure.
Regulatory Synergy Drives Telemetry and Data Accuracy
NISO is coordinating its technical efforts with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to finalize the deployment of advanced telemetry systems at electricity trading points. According to Bello, this infrastructure is essential for the efficiency of the electricity market, as it enables financial settlements to occur in real time based on accurate consumption data. The advanced stages of this deployment suggest that the market is moving toward a more transparent data management model, which is expected to reduce disputes between generation and distribution entities.
IoT Integration to Provide Comprehensive Network Visibility
A significant component of the modernization drive involves the installation of Internet of Things (IoT) metering systems across the majority of the nation's generating units. These sensors are being placed at critical interfaces between transmission and generation substations to create a seamless flow of information. Bello stated that once this ongoing project is completed by the end of the year, NISO will possess end to end visibility of the national grid, stretching from the initial generation phase through to final distribution lines.
