What is E. coli?
E. coli is a species of bacteria found naturally in the lower intestines of humans and warm-blooded animals. In its natural environment the gut most strains are harmless and even beneficial to digestion. However, when these bacteria are consumed through contaminated water, undercooked food, or poor hand hygiene, they can cause serious illness.
The Health Implications
While many strains cause only mild gastrointestinal upset, others such as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) are significantly more dangerous.
Common Symptoms: Diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and nausea.
Severe Cases: Bloody diarrhoea, fever, and lethargy.
