Daylight Violence in Columbia Heights

Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) detectives are intensifying their search for a suspect involved in a violent encounter that occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, March 1. Third District officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Columbia Road NW at approximately 3:26 PM after receiving reports of gunfire in the busy commercial and residential corridor. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered an adult victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Emergency Response and Victim Status

Personnel from D.C. Fire and EMS arrived shortly after the shooting to provide life-saving measures at the scene. The victim was stabilized and transported to a nearby trauma center for treatment of injuries described by officials as serious. While the department has not provided a recent update on the victim's recovery, the case is being handled by the Violent Crimes Branch as an assault with a dangerous weapon.

Surveillance Assets and Suspect Description

In a push for community leads, the MPD has released high-resolution surveillance images and video clips captured by cameras positioned along Columbia Road. The footage shows the suspect shortly after the discharge of the firearm. Investigators are asking the public to look closely at the individual’s clothing, gait, and any distinguishing physical characteristics. Detectives believe the suspect may have ties to the immediate Columbia Heights or Adams Morgan areas based on the direction of flight following the incident.
