Engineering a Novel Solution for Long Distance Travel
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Seres has been granted a patent for an integrated "in-vehicle toilet" designed to enhance passenger comfort during extended journeys. According to the patent filing submitted to China’s intellectual property administration on April 10, the system is engineered to satisfy hygiene needs during long trips, camping excursions, or overnight stays within the vehicle. While the company, based in Chongqing, has not yet integrated this technology into its production models, the filing represents a bold attempt to rethink the interior utility of the modern sports utility vehicle.
Mechanized Integration and Voice Activated Deployment
The proposed system features a toilet that remains concealed beneath the passenger seat when not in use, effectively maximizing cabin space without requiring structural alterations to the vehicle's footprint. The patent describes a mechanized sliding tray that can be deployed via a physical push or through sophisticated voice-activated commands. This level of automation aligns with the broader trend in the Chinese EV market, where manufacturers are increasingly relying on software-driven convenience features to attract tech-savvy consumers in a highly contested economic landscape.
Thermal Waste Management and Odor Control Systems
To address the logistical challenges of onboard sanitation, Seres engineers have incorporated a specialized ventilation and waste processing system. The design includes an exhaust pipe and an internal fan specifically tasked with channeling odors out of the vehicle’s cabin. Furthermore, the unit features a rotating heating element intended to evaporate liquid waste and dry solid materials, reducing the frequency of manual tank maintenance. Despite these automated processes, the patent clarifies that the remaining waste collected in the storage tank must still be emptied by the user manually.
