The Correlation Between Financial Hardship and Regional Instability

Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has identified a direct link between the failure of state governments to settle retirement benefits and the escalating crisis of kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria. Speaking in Bauchi on Sunday, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs argued that when pensioners are deprived of their gratuities for years, their dependents often face extreme hardship. This economic desperation, Tuggar noted, creates a fertile ground for recruitment into criminal activities, as families struggle to survive without their rightful social safety nets.

A Commitment to Resolving Longstanding Pension Arrears

As a formal aspirant for the 2027 Bauchi State governorship election, Tuggar has placed pension and gratuity reform at the forefront of his campaign. He expressed concern that these payments have remained stagnant for years, causing widespread distress among retired workers. Tuggar emphasized that resolving these arrears is a matter of survival for individuals and a strategic necessity for state security, promising that his administration would prioritize these payments to alleviate the suffering of affected families.

Economic Diversification Through Remote Service Outsourcing

Part of Tuggar’s vision involves leveraging modern technology to solve the youth unemployment crisis without requiring migration. He proposed a business process outsourcing model, similar to those used in India, where educated youths in Bauchi can be trained to handle customer care services for multinational companies in Europe and America. By earning monthly salaries remotely, thousands of young people could achieve financial independence while remaining in their home state, significantly reducing the pool of idle labor susceptible to criminal influence.
