A Vision for Northern Economic Sovereignty

In a bold policy declaration, Peter Obi has asserted that his plans for Northern Nigeria surpass those of any other political leader in the country’s history. During an interview with ARISE NEWS on Monday, the ADC chieftain outlined a vision centered on turning the region’s vast, uncultivated land into Nigeria’s primary economic engine. Obi argued that the North holds the key to national prosperity, suggesting that a transition from an oil-dependent economy to an agrarian-led model would generate more revenue than petroleum ever has.

Strategic Alliances to Combat Insecurity

Obi revealed that his strategy involves close collaboration with prominent northern political figures, specifically mentioning Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai. This alliance aims to confront the persistent insecurity in the North by targeting its socioeconomic foundations. Rather than relying solely on kinetic military force, Obi’s plan focuses on "human security," which involves massive underinvestment in critical sectors such as education and healthcare to prevent the radicalization and recruitment of impoverished youth.

Land as the New Oil

The core of Obi’s economic reform lies in the commercialization of the North's geography. He described the region's uncultivated land as Nigeria's most valuable future asset. By incentivizing large-scale farming and agro-processing, Obi believes the country can lift millions out of poverty while simultaneously securing the region. "We have to start doing this immediately," he stressed, pointing out that agricultural wealth is more sustainable and inclusive than the centralized revenues derived from the oil sector.
