Coordinated Search Leads to Explosive Discovery
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully averted a major security breach at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre. Acting on credible intelligence provided by correctional authorities, Commissioner of Police Baba Azare directed a tactical intervention involving the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit. The coordinated operation resulted in the discovery of several dangerous items hidden within the facility, highlighting a significant threat to the infrastructure and the lives of those within.
Recovery of High-Explosive Rounds and Tools
During the search, the EOD team recovered two 90mm high-explosive rounds and a 45cm burning fuse. In addition to the explosives, security forces found a collection of tools, including a conduit iron pipe, two 12mm iron chisels, a flat screwdriver, and a pair of pincers. The presence of these items suggests a sophisticated attempt to compromise the facility's security. The EOD unit professionally rendered the devices safe, ensuring no imminent threat remained.
Reinforced Security and Increased Surveillance
In the wake of the discovery, the Police Command has moved to significantly bolster security around the custodial facility. New measures include intensified surveillance, stricter access control protocols, and increased patrols in the surrounding areas. These steps are intended to prevent any further attempts at infiltration or internal disruption while the facility returns to normal operations.
