A Unified Front Against Extortionate Tax Practices
The Nigerian business landscape is set for a significant regulatory overhaul as the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigerian Police Force move to eliminate illegal roadblocks used for tax collection. During a high level summit between senior police officials and tax administrators, both parties identified these unauthorized checkpoints as major impediments to national economic stability. This strategic alliance aims to replace fragmented and often predatory local collection methods with a transparent, uniform system of revenue administration that aligns with federal economic objectives.
Executive Mandate for Fiscal Transparency
JRB Executive Secretary Segun Adesokan emphasized that the partnership is a direct extension of the tax reforms championed by President Bola Tinubu. These reforms prioritize taxing prosperity and profits rather than investments and poverty, a shift intended to alleviate the financial burden on small businesses and ordinary citizens. Adesokan clarified that the Board’s primary objective is to restore fairness and efficiency to the system, ensuring that revenue collection does not become a tool for harassment or an obstacle to the free movement of goods.
Legislative Crackdown on Non-State Actors
The enforcement of these new standards is backed by a Model Harmonized Taxes and Levies Act, which has already been adopted by 15 State Houses of Assembly. This legislation specifically criminalizes the involvement of non-state actors in revenue collection and bans cash-based tax transactions on public roads. By providing a legal framework to prosecute those who mount illegal roadblocks or distribute unauthorized tax stickers, the government seeks to remove the hidden costs that currently inflate the prices of essential goods and services for consumers.
